The paths towards building a career as a musician are as individual as the musicians themselves. At the same time, competition for professional engagements and positions is greater than ever. Young musicians spend years developing their skills, taking part in masterclasses, competitions, academy programmes and other projects to further their artistic development and prepare themselves for professional life.
These programmes play an important role. Nevertheless, I believe there is a crucial gap: the transition from education into professional practice.
Professional experience is, as in many other professions, an essential prerequisite for further engagements, applications and the long-term development of a career. At the same time, this creates a paradox: how can you gain professional experience if you are not given the opportunity to acquire it in the first place?
Especially in an albeit musical but smaller country like Finland, professional opportunities can also depend heavily on existing networks and personal contacts. For young, highly qualified musicians, this can make it difficult to take the first step into professional life.
This is precisely where Nylands Kammarkonserter wants to make a difference.
We create a platform where young professional musicians perform alongside established artists from Finland and abroad. Our aim is not only to facilitate musical collaboration, but to create a genuine exchange between generations and artistic backgrounds — on stage, during rehearsals and on a personal level.
An essential part of our work is ensuring fair conditions for all musicians involved. Young artists should not simply be regarded as “emerging talent” in the background, but as professional musicians and equal members of a professional ensemble — with proper contracts and appropriate fees.
As Artistic Director of Nylands Kammarkonserter, I want to do more than create opportunities for individual musicians. Our long-term ambition is to strengthen the chamber music scene in Finland, build meaningful connections between generations and international artists, and at the same time bring chamber music to a wider audience.
This vision is also rooted in my own experience as a musician and in my belief that the professional music world must constantly evolve. We want to create structures in which young artists are not simply waiting for their next opportunity, but are encouraged to take initiative, assume responsibility and actively contribute to shaping the musical landscape themselves.
